Lolz

Most of you are probably familiar with this already, but I've been meaning to post pictures of the "designer underwear" series by Slow and Steady Wins the Race for a while. The first time I saw the collection I literally laughed out loud. How awesome is SSWR for mimicking CdG by slapping a pair of knickers onto a pair of knickers? Genius! And where would MM be without those four famous stitches... Check out the rest of their collection here.

Comme des Garcons// Martin Margiela// Calvin Klein

Clearly Mary Ping & Co are ridiculing label whores--which is all good fun--and I applaud them for making their clothes affordable unlike so many other design collectives who pull similar stunts then charge a fortune for it (which makes their work such a sad sad contradiction, you realize). One thing I find amusing however is that the sort of people who like SSWR are probably the sort of people who who wear CdG and Martin Margiela... So at the end of the day, who's making fun of who?

Pretty pleats please

So remember that Issey Miyake Pleats Please bag I talked about? I ordered the one in black and white fully intending to use it myself but then I ended up giving it away to a friend as a gift of sorts. I kinda regretted it and figured I might as well get another once since I hardly ever come across a bag that I like (the reason being I absolutely cannot carry a bag with ornaments and hardware, don't ask...).
I went with all white and I love it. It morphs into all sorts of shapes and sizes.

The trees shake their heads like disco dancers in the strobelights of nightlife long ago

I know these photos of sasha have been featured on tons of fashblogs but I'm posting this one because I am genuinely puzzled as to how this girl manages to make Margiela couture look as wearable as any old t-shirt.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

He used to do surgery for girls in the eighties but gravity always wins

I'll take Linda Zack's Swimsuit Model over a Victoria's Secret catalogue any day.

See more here.

And again

Ok I've been going on about Permanent Vacation for way too long but this is just so fantastic...

Pop pop poppin my collar

I love this tent shirt with skinny jersey sleeves by y-3. It's such a fresh look for spring. And it even has a very small logo embroidered ever so subtly in white on the neck at the back. I like white on white embroidery. Available at Oak NYC.

Oh my lords

I thought Lords of Dogtown was pretty good for a based-on-a-true-story type movie but what was even better was the documentary version that came out before it--Dogtown and Z-Boys. The footage was great (although stacey peralta got a bit annoying at times) and the music was dopedopedope. It's one of those movies you can have playing on the tv while hanging out at home with friends.

Life can be so easy, when you live by the sea

I tend not to wear much black in the summer but if I were to deck out in it I'd go for a west coast inspired luxe beach style like this.

PV oversized cream tee, Rick Owens maxi skirt, havaianas, Martin Margiela leather woven bag, yarborough knitted bangle. (I got the t-shirt by the way yay)

Baby face

Kudos to Rinko Kikuchi for showing the world that it's not just the frenchies who can pull off messy hair sans make up. Girl looks like a million bucks with a gremlin perched on her head.

More laziness

Ok I must be more obsessed with Permanent Vacation than I realized. Two more PV items that are totally hot: the hope cap (inspired by an R.Kelly vid, what's not to love about that seriously), and "the clan" chunky knit sweater.

Names matter

I probably wouldn't be so taken by Swedish label Permanent Vacation if it weren't for the fact that one of my favorite movies happens to be Jim Jarmusch's debut film from his days as a college student, "Permanent Vacation". I've mentioned it on my blog before, but really there's no way of describing how utterly bizarre and cool it is unless you see it for yourself. This scene where Chris Parker dances around to an old record while his lace slip-clad roommate sits looking out the window all detatched and indifferent is...simply classic.

Anyway. This one boutique that I go to quite often recently stocked some stuff by PV and labels aside, I do find the clothes quite nice. Loose and comfy looking.

But I must say, the oversized logo tee from AW07 really did it for me (and trust me when I say I am not a logotee kinda gal). I guess I just really love the phrase permanent vacation--I find something incredibly romantic about the idea of roaming around the streets with no particular goals in mind, and eventually maybe disappearing somewhere. Does that make sense? Judging from their lookbook I'm guessing PV embraces this lazy-aesthetic too.

4:33 AM: eating blueberry toast, listening to bjork

I will wade out
till my thighs are steeped in burning flowers
I will take the sun in my mouth
and leap into the ripe air
Alive
with closed eyes
to dash against darkness
in the sleeping curves of my body
Shall enter fingers of smooth mastery
with chasteness of sea-girls
Will I complete the mystery
of my flesh
I will rise
After a thousand years
lipping
flowers
And set my teeth in the silver of the moon

-E.E Cummings

Bjork sings this poem in her song Sun In My Mouth. It's beautiful isn't it?

If you leave it alone it might just happen

I like Camilla Akrans' photography and the stories they tell. The two photos I have here probably aren't the best examples of her work as a fashion photographer because looking through her portfolio I can tell she excels at playing aroung with shapes and capturing the true texture of clothing. But I find her closeup shots of faces intriguing because they have this soft and retro/morbid quality. See more at lundlund (fantastic site for lazy sunday afternoon browsing). Found via emma's closet.

Um,

Hello, who is she and why is she so cool?
I am obsessed with this woman and her entire look. While I love the slightly cropped tailored ankle pant that we've been seeing a lot this season...oh man this lady really knows how to do the oversize thing and make it look good. The idea of throwing on an entirely different colored jacket over a matching tweed vest and pant suit is crazy. And the way the navy grey and beige compliment eachother is like whoa. Good for her.
P.S My guess is that she's wearing Veronique Branquinho...any other guesses?

Gently down the stream

I found some photos from The Row portfolio so I thought I'd share them with you. I can't say much about the clothes because I've actually never seen anything of The Row in person. But I like the concept--the hot mom and her weirdo kid with the barbie dolls, sitting around in a white washed apartment (with a white iron heater, I freakin love those things!!!) looking all glam in feathers and leather and masks... niiice.
P.S with regards to using a kid in an ad campaign for adults, I really have nothing to say. I think it's fine as long as the sexual undertone isn't extreme (because ok let's face it, people who are all into radically critiquing society seem to associate just about anything with sex), but I don't see a huge problem with it in this case. I think it's interesting actually because the olsen-twins are clearly pretty childlike themselves and so looking at the girl, you're really reminded of them--particularly Mary-Kate. Anyhow I'm not someone who is into arguing the nittygritties of political correctness or moral righteousness so let's leave it at that.

Blast from the past

Check out this ultra mini high-waisted red leather zip-up bodycon skirt! (It's hard to tell but the waist is V shaped. )

I'd totally forgotten I'd picked it out of my mom's old wardrobe a while ago, until I read a post about zippers at stylebytes... at which point I jumped up and immediately went rummaging through my box of crap under the bed (don't tell me you don't have one of those either). The story is that my dad got it as a gift for mama in Hawaii back when they were dating...so we're talking eighties, literally. And it comes with this matching big shouldered leather jacket which is soo Michelle Pfeiffer in Into the Night it's kinda laughable. Anyhow it's super super tight and the leather is so soft it really feels nice like a second skin.

If Ross was my friend I'd get these bruise posters for him. By graphic designer Mike Mills, available at Colette.

ROYGBIV

I recently discovered Paris-based Japanese designer duo Communn, and while I'm not really sure about their clothes yet (it looks like real basic stuff, good tailoring maybe but nothing special) I do like their AW08 presentation shot by Lukas Wassman.

Wow's the word

I love everything about this photograph taken backstage at Anne Valerie Hash. The model's expression, her cat eyes, her slick hair! And lipstick to compliment the gorgeous dress--is it leather? Silk? Polyester? I dunno but whoa, that color! If there exists a single correct shade for every ridiculously vague color name like blue-grey or chartreuse then this one's totally it for burnt orange.

Farmer chic

topped off with some neckwarmers, bowler hats and lace-up birkenstocks with ankle socks (jen wrote about a similar pair of sandals for men which are sort of yucky but for girls I think these aren't half bad)... Overall it's a strange collection that evokes nice images of dirt and garden forks and green vegetables. I like Carin Wester.
